Oakland, CA

Oakland voters approved Measure QQ, to lower the voting age to 16 for school board elections, with 67% of the vote at the November 2020 election. This is a landmark victory, making Oakland the largest jurisdiction to approve of 16-year-old voting in any form. The Oakland Youth Vote campaign was led by student advocates and a strong community coalition. The coalition is now focused on ensuring the measure is implemented quickly and smoothly, with a goal of implementing the change in time for 16- and 17-year olds to vote in the 2024 election.
