General Questions

Vote16USA is a national organization working to lower the voting age to 16 in local, state, and federal elections. We support grassroots campaigns, engage young people in civic action, and advocate for policies that recognize 16- and 17-year-olds as full participants in our democracy.

Sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds work, pay taxes, drive, and in many states, can be tried as adults in court. They also form political opinions, engage in civic discussions, and are impacted by government decisions—yet they are denied the right to vote. Research shows that voting early helps build lifelong civic habits, strengthening democracy in the long run.

No. Vote16USA is a nonpartisan initiative focused solely on expanding democratic participation and empowering young people to have a voice in their communities.

Vote16USA has supported successful campaigns in 15 jurisdictions across the U.S. where 16- and 17-year-olds can now vote in local elections. We’ve also built a national movement, mobilized thousands of young leaders, and released key reports like Young Voices at the Ballot Box to advance research and public understanding of this issue.

There are several cities, including Newark, NJ, Berkeley & Oakland, CA, Takoma Park, Greenbelt, and Hyattsville, MD, that allow 16- and 17-year-olds to vote in local elections. More campaigns are underway nationwide.

Yes. The U.S. Constitution neither expressly authorizes, nor forbids, lowering the voting age to 16. This means cities, states, and Congress can pass laws lowering the voting age to 16 for their elections.

Scientific research shows that 16- and 17-year-olds have the same cognitive ability to make informed decisions as older voters. Plus, they’re in high school, where they learn about government and current events, making them highly engaged in civic life.

No. Just like older voters, participation would be voluntary. Lowering the voting age simply gives 16- and 17-year-olds the choice to participate in democracy.
