March 3, 2021

Congresswomen Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), Grace Meng (NY-06), and Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) have re-introduced an amendment to the HR.1 “For the People Act” legislation, to add a provision to the bill to lower the voting age to 16 for federal elections. It is expected to be debated and voted on the morning of March 3.

This amendment was first introduced when HR.1 was up for debate in 2019. In 2019, the amendment earned 126 votes in favor, an unprecedented show of support for lowering the voting age.

This amendment to the 2021 version of HR.1 builds on momentum for lowering the voting age established by a proposed constitutional amendment to allow 16- and 17-year-old voting that was introduced in early February.
